Quick Take

  • The initiative aims to enable "agentic commerce," allowing autonomous systems to transact for online services.

Google has released a new protocol to enable AI agents to programmatically make on-chain payments using stablecoins. The project, referred to as Payments MCP or x402, is designed to create a new form of 'agentic commerce' where autonomous AI systems can pay for data, services, or other digital resources without direct human intervention.

At the heart of AP2 is a commitment to transparency and security. Mandates serve as the core mechanism, acting as verifiable proof of a user's instructions. These digital contracts are cryptographically signed using VCs, making them tamper-proof and ensuring that every step in a transaction is auditable and authentic.

Google is collaborating with a diverse group of more than 60 organizations to help shape the future of agentic payments, including Adyen, American Express, Ant International, Coinbase, Etsy, Forter, Intuit, JCB, Mastercard, Mysten Labs, Paypal, Revolut, Salesforce, ServiceNow, UnionPay International, Worldpay, and more.
