Stripe has officially announced "Open Issuance," a new platform designed to help stablecoins achieve mainstream adoption. The service provides issuers with a suite of tools, including customizable smart contracts, the ability to issue on any blockchain, reserve management, and full control over mint and burn fees. The platform also features out-of-the-box interoperability with other stablecoins created using the Open Issuance standard.
This development signals a significant move by the payments processor to build foundational infrastructure for the digital asset economy. By simplifying the complex process of launching and managing a stablecoin, Stripe is lowering the barrier to entry for new participants and potentially increasing the supply of regulated and compliant digital dollars.
In a related announcement, Stripe revealed it is the engine behind OpenAI's new commerce features in ChatGPT. A new "Instant Checkout" feature will be powered by Stripe. The two companies also co-developed the "Agentic Commerce Protocol" and Stripe is launching a new API for what it calls "agentic payments," pointing to a future of more autonomous, AI-driven transactions.
