Coinmarketcap has introduced the CMC20, a DeFi-native tradable index token launched on the BNB Chain. The token is designed to provide investors with diversified exposure to the top 20 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins and other ineligible assets.

Positioned as crypto’s equivalent of the S&P 500, the CMC20 aims to offer a transparent and investable benchmark in an increasingly crowded market of over 27 million tokens. By tracking a curated basket of assets—including L1s, infrastructure tokens, and DeFi assets—it simplifies portfolio construction for both retail and institutional investors.

The decision to launch on BNB Chain was driven by the network’s deep liquidity, permissionless nature, and DeFi composability. Built in partnership with Reserve, the index utilizes Celer Network to bridge new assets, ensuring the index remains current.

Unlike a static reference index, the CMC20 is a fully tradable token. It launched with immediate ecosystem support, including trading on PancakeSwap and minting/redemption capabilities via the Reserve dApp. Coinmarketcap also highlighted upcoming institutional use cases, such as collateralized lending and automated portfolio rotation, signaling a focus on sophisticated financial products.
