November 18, 2025

Mastercard has selected the Polygon blockchain to power a new username-based transfer system for self-custody wallets, eliminating the need for users to copy and paste long, error-prone wallet addresses.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with crypto payments firm Mercuryo, introduces verified usernames through Mastercard Crypto Credential. Users onboard once, undergo identity verification via Mercuryo, receive a unique username alias, and link it directly to their self-custodial wallet. From then on, sending crypto becomes as simple as typing a username – similar to sending money via apps like Venmo or Cash App – with assets arriving instantly and securely.
Wallets supporting the feature can also request a special on-chain token verifying compatibility, allowing apps to intelligently route transactions using these credentials.
The partnership underscores Polygon's growing role in real-world payments and regulated crypto infrastructure. By combining Mastercard's trusted verification standards with Polygon's efficient layer-2 network, the system aims to onboard millions of new users who have been deterred by crypto's technical complexities.
